And the rate of update and enhancement is absolutely STAGGERING.Īs well, the fact that the online community is so active and responsive is a welcome change from the moribund ACID Pro community.
It's a bit of an adjustment, particularly in the way routing works, but it's lean, clean, and works like a hot damn. I won't extend this (already lengthy) post longer by going into the details of my current experience with REAPER, apart from saying that IT ROCKS. As my musical experimentation increased, I kept waiting to see what was coming in the hypothetical new release of ACID Pro, but finally got tired of waiting and decided to try REAPER.

I don't think I need to convince anyone of how important it is for software releases to keep pace with technology. I have a suspicion that most (if not all) of the ACID developers have either left Sony Creative Software or moved over to other products. I guess that's what can happen when a small company (Madison Media Software, formerly Sonic Foundry) is swallowed up by a huge corporation - focus can be completely lost on a great product, allowing it to languish and die. Such a shame for the software that pioneered loop-based music creation. It's a pretty good DAW, but they have evidently scaled back development efforts to a drastic extent. (In contrast to Sony Vegas, which appears to be enjoying a lot of interest.) I chalk this up to Sony's mismanagement of the product. If the incredibly low rate of user posting on the Sony Creative ACID Products Family Forum is any indication, there seems to be even less interest in ACID Pro than ever. It is close to two years since their last release of a maintenance version of ACID Pro 6 and there appears to be little or no activity on the horizon. To me it now appears that ACID Pro has completely stalled as a product. But apparently I was wrong in my assumptions. Sony Creative was due for a new version anyway - most of their other products are already Vista-compatible. At the time I assumed it wouldn't be long before a new version of ACID Pro was released that supported Vista. I did these, and in general it's running OK.

ACID Pro was not Vista-certified, and there are a few tweaks required to the Windows registry to make it run correctly in standard user mode (i.e. My disillusionment with ACID began when I upgraded my computer to Vista, earlier this year. IMHO ACID Pro was actually starting to approach the sophistication of tools like Cubase, although it was being largely ignored by the majority of the DAW community. I started with canned loops, but quickly moved into MIDI as a way to have complete control over every facet of the music.Ībout a year after I bought ACID Pro 5, Sony Creative released version 6, with tons of new features, and that was really cool. But I soon discovered the excitement in creating my own music. My initial purpose was mainly to create mixes, and it worked quite well for that. I started using ACID PRO a few years ago (when it was still version 5). Just thought I'd introduce myself and solicit comments from others who may have some experience with ACID Pro and their subsequent experiences with REAPER.
